“A Lift for a Vet” Donates Vertical Transportation Equipment and Labor to United States Veterans in Need

The Local #5 of Philadelphia International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) and Higher Mobility, a residential elevator company serving Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, have joined forces to form a charity called “A Lift for a Vet.” The organization will be providing residential elevators, stair chairs, and wheel chair lifts to any veteran who is truly in need of vertical transportation equipment. “A Lift for a Vet” is currently accepting donation requests from all United States Veterans.

The Local #5 of Philadelphia International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) and Higher Mobility, a residential elevator company serving Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, have joined forces to form a charity called “A Lift for a Vet.” The organization will be providing residential elevators, stair chairs, and wheel chair lifts to any United States Veteran who is truly in need of vertical transportation equipment. Residential elevators and other in-home lifts greatly increase the daily mobility of veterans who may be limited to a small section of their house or have a difficult time completing simple day-to-day tasks due to injuries or pain. “A Lift for a Vet” is currently accepting donation requests from all United States Veterans.

A Lift for a Vet’s first project is for Chris Mohrmann, a former Marine and a 4-year veteran who suffered a rare bacterial infection that caused the muscles in his arms and legs to die. In order to keep Morhrmann alive, a drastic measure was taken on July 6, 2010; the dead tissue was removed via amputations of his arms and legs. Mohrmann survived the surgery, but in the process of recovery, he gained multiple secondary infections including pneumonia and a fungal infection in his blood.

Tina Mohrmann, Chris’ wife is in the process of retrofitting their home so that it is handicap accessible. In addition to the overwhelming number of details that need attention to perform the changes necessary for Chris’ ease and comfort, the Local #5 of Philadelphia IUEC will be purchasing a wheel chair lift at cost from Higher Mobility and installing it at Chris’ residence in West Berlin, NJ at no charge.

Higher Mobility is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), as Michael Walsh, its owner, is a disabled veteran himself. Walsh is honored to be able to help Chris and all United States Veterans.

“We are really looking forward to completing this project for Chris,” Walsh said. “The work we did on projects with ‘Homes for Our Troops’ inspired me to find other ways to assist our Nation’s veterans; helping them to live more easily on a daily basis is the least we can do,” he remarked.

The Mohrmann’s are eagerly waiting the lift’s installation, because Chris is currently confined to an electric wheel chair and a manual chair. The lift will allow him to travel to his home’s deck and to the mailbox without needing assistance from anyone. Chris discussed how working with Michael Walsh and the Local 5 IUEC was a tremendous experience for him. He recalled how Michael Walsh phoned him out of the blue and said that he wanted to help; the offer came as a huge surprise to Chris and his family. Shortly after, Walsh came out and took measurements for the lift.

“My whole family is involved in the military and I went in to do my part as a teenager. It’s nice to know that people value the service I gave to this country,” said Chris Mohrmann. “We would never have been able to afford a lift like this, because I’m out of work and won’t be going back. My wife had to quit her job overnight to take care of me; we went from a two income family to one with no income at all. With ‘A Lift for A Vet’s’ help, I will be able to move around my house and do things that would have been impossible before,” he continued

Ed Loomis, Business Agent for the Local 5 IUEC feels that the Union’s labor contribution is definitely worthwhile.

“The men and women who served in the military are truly American heroes,” Loomis stated. “The brothers and sisters of the Local 5 are grateful for the opportunity to help them out in their time of need; this is a small token of our gratitude for their service to this great country,” he said.
