Light Sweet Crude… and Cookies

0
I turned on the news this morning and instantly received my first commercial message of the day. You've probably seen it, it's a pitch from Time Warner which offers up well scrubbed "employees" who spend thirty seconds or so reading a script designed to convince us that they are "Moms," "Dads," and regular working schleps, just like us... pardon that - just like me. The ad is an attempt to put a face on the faceless, to create the illusion that the giant soulless organization is really warm and fuzzy with a friendly beating heart and smells like fresh baked cookies.

Fort Worth man converts Hyundai Accents into cargo haulers to aid unemployed

2
George Tengowski hopes an unusual idea, turning a compact car into a two-seat cargo hauler, can help to retrain unemployed people for jobs. He has accomplished the first step. Tengowski has converted three Hyundai Accent hatchbacks: He removed the rear seat, extended the cargo deck, installed a metal partition and added an optional tie-down bar. He has them on consignment at Manuel Hyundai in west Fort Worth.

The Elders of Anti-Zion

5
The initiatives of small local groups in various countries are not what they appear to be. Far from it! They are part of a world-wide, organized and coordinated conspiracy, which uses every means to achieve their nefarious aim. Unlike the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion”, the forged document that was produced a hundred years ago, this is a genuine plot, something like the “Protocols of the Elders of Anti-Zion”.

The Transformation of the American Conservative Movement into Fascism

108
I am not sure when I first detected the noxious fumes that would envelop the conservative movement in the Obama era. It might have been early on, in April 2009, when I visited a series of gun shows in rural California and Nevada. Perusing tables piled high with high-caliber semi-automatic weapons and chatting with anyone in my vicinity, I heard urgent warnings of mass roundups, concentration camps, and a socialist government in Washington. "These people that are purchasing these guns are people that are worried about what's going on in this country," a gun dealer told me outside a show in Reno. "Good luck Obama," a young gun enthusiast remarked to me. "We outnumber him 100 to 1." At this time, the Tea Party movement had not even registered on the national media's radar.

The attacks of September 11 were a pretext to a war already under consideration, Gul said. "I think some of the neocons, who were very close to President [George W.] Bush, they wanted that he could embark on a universal adventure of Pax Americana, and they thought that the world was lying prostrate in front of them," he said. The 2001 terrorist attacks helped win the public support for the neocon plans, he said.

Strike Fighter Squadron 136 to Ensign: “Fagmeister”

4
Ensign Steve Crowston thought getting his own call sign from his squadron mates would be a friendly induction into the tightly knit and testosterone-fueled culture of naval aviation. But when the new admin officer walked into the ready room for Strike Fighter Squadron 136 in Virginia last year, he claims he found dozens of aviators — including the squadron’s commanding officer — openly mocking him as an alleged homosexual.

Recently-Returned Veterans’ Jobless Rate Climbs to 11.8% In July

1
The Wall Street Journal (8/7, Zhao) reports that while the jobless rate for veterans overall is 8.4%, below the 9.5% for the general population, veterans who served since September 2001 saw their unemployment rate climb in July to 11.8%, up from 11.5 % one month earlier. Younger veterans in particular, who generally have less work experience and skills, face special difficulties finding work.

Disappearing Oil and Gulf Seafood: Passing the Sniff Test

29
Since the Deepwater Horizon exploded and sank on April 20 killing 11 workers the NOAA estimates that 206 million gallons of "light sweet crude" spewed from BP's Macondo well field, fouling the waters of the Gulf, shutting down much of the commerce of the surrounding region and creating a giant toxic bouillabaisse in which now swim whatever critters managed to survive poisoning, suffocation, or being roasted alive.
