Enjoy Some of the Best HD Film Footage on the Net

by  Jim W. Dean, VT Editor

Welcome Aboard for Captain Jim's Movie Shows

I have not been to a movie theater in years. When you produce TV and video you always have piles of backlogged work waiting for you. Plus getting out to a theater is a chore when I have so much to watch here.

Add in the wonderful quality of the online HF material and home can be like the Star Ship Enterprise, which can take you anywhere you want to go to see something in a jiffy.

Vimeo was an early bird website for putting up HD material, targeted initially to independent film producers needing a cutting edge website to demo their work.

It was easier and cheaper to pay Vimeo a small fee so their work could be shown in it’s best quality. And I am talking full screen full HD here folks, which virtually all monitors will display. If you have not seen footage like this before you are in for a treat.

I try to get over to Vimeo every weekend to view the new stuff to calibrate my eyeball for what ‘good’ quality looks like, as that is a moving target. I can also pick up good shooting tips and follow what some of the newer HD cameras can do.

Seanna Sharpe - 285 feet up on the Williamsburg Bridge, NYC

Last week I posted the delightful Williamsburg Bridge aerialist Seanna Sharpe who crashed NY City and performed her act dangling from silk ropes almost 300 feet up.

It was a wonderful treat for all the surprised pedestrians, and more than a little irritation for the local patrol cops.

It got a good reception with our VT audience so here we are for the next round. These clips will generally be shorts…and a variety of them for some great recession proof but high quality home entertainment. Enjoy.

First up today is a time lapse selection. A lot of shooters are traveling into the back country under all conditions to get these dramatic shots.

This Oregon one represents the gems from a HUGE amount of shooting work. Our thanks to Uncage the Soul Productions for their description:

Finding Oregon is the compilation of six months of time lapse photography across the state of Oregon, punctuated by a 1600 mile road trip in September.

We’ve filmed the Columbia River Gorge, Mt Hood, Mt Jefferson, the Southwestern Coast, the Alvord Desert, Leslie Gulch, Blue Mountains, Crater Lake, Eagle Cap Wilderness, Deschutes River, and more.

We’re proud to have touched all four corners of the state; however Oregon is the kind of place that the more you see, the more places there are to still discover.

Some viewing instructions. Be sure to click the full screen icon in the lower right hand corner. This is all gorgeous footage at full screen. and don’t be shy about cranking the sound up…this is the movies.

If you don’t have a 2.1 computer speaker sound system, reward yourself and get a good one so you can enjoy good quality audio. A couple of home movie dates will cover the cost, and the beer and popcorn are much cheaper, too :-)… Jim Dean

Next is an unusual production by Alan Wilson. You have to hang in there through the beginning as the lead in is an artistic tease, his walking through English fields and forests with a boogie board under his arm to the coast. And what he does in the huge waves when he gets there is worth the wait to see.

How they shot this footage, keeping the camera dry and fairly steady in what are obvious high seas is a mystery. But this is both visual and physical  journey folks as you have a front seat where the cameraman is shooting, without the seasickness.

Last up is the grand finale, a famous mountain skier and snow boarder team up to trek up 20,000 feet to the summit of Mt. Denali (Mt. McKinley in Alaska) to enjoy the ride down, at least part way anyway. The footage is just stunning and I admired the physical challenge having to lug all their stuff to the top.

The obviously very tough professional lady mountain guides were quite a surprise. They never looked tired, even once. For all of us who will never be able to do this, and for folks like me wouldn’t even if they had the shot (too scared and hate the cold)…this is a vicarious trip indeed. Ahh…to be in the mid twenties again !!!! But this will have to suffix.

Our thanks for Director Jimmy Chin and Editor Renan Oxturk for bringing us into all of these adventure moments:

Free-ride skier Sage Cattabriga-Alosa and big mountain snowboarder Lucas Debari step out of their elements and make an attempt to climb, ski and snowboard Denali.

Sage and Lucas get a helping hand from a huge cast of seasoned and professional climbers and ski mountaineers from the North Face Athlete Team, including Hilaree O’Neill, Conrad Anker, Ingrid Backstrom, Jim Zellers, Emilio Previtali and Giulia Monego, as the two embark on the hardest expedition of their lives.

That’s it for tonight folks. Let me know your thoughts in the comments. The goal here is to save you busy folks the hunt wading through the ‘not very good stuff’ to find the gems.

Everything you will be seeing here I will have saved into a folder for reviewing when I am in the mood. It’s a treat to able to take a short break and enjoy a good getaway compliment of a good filmmaker.   Y’all come back now, ya here?  Jim W. Dean
