Made in USA

From the national insane asylum
From the factories of death
Come the instruments of destruction
To rob the living of their breath.
Poisons from atmospheric testing
Choke the Earth’s once pristine air
The victims in stunned silence
Perish in despair.
The madmen make new botulisms
For which there is no cure
Bombs of jellied gasoline
Grisly suffering to ensure.
Bombs of white phosphorus
Shells with deadly radiation
“Daisy cutters” that diffuse shrapnel
From the paranoiac nation.
Once we gave the world Edison
The phonograph, Hollywood, winged flight,
A thousand great inventions
Medical vaccines, electric light!
Now our factories make napalm
Is there nothing but the night?
How did it happen
That our chief industry is war?
What put us on the path
To destroy all the good that went before?
