General Petraeus Ambushed

David PetraeusOn September 12, 2013, while walking to give his first lecture at City University New York, CUNY, General (RET) David Petraeus did not expect to be ambushed and harassed, heckled and insulted by a mob of students organized by a teacher named Sandor John. John, according to the Internet, is a professor at Hunter College, which is part of CUNY and teaches Latin American History.

He gave an interview that evening on INSIDE EDITION where he called the students “courageous” for confronting David Petraeus while walking to work on the sidewalks of New York City. Courageous, I do not think so, Mr. John, as your group acted like a bunch of cowards ganging up on one man, ambushed him and looked liked a mob which was displaying nothing but hooliganism. A liberal college professor organizing an ambush protest, against a man that has dedicated his life to his country around the world and served in two wars is not courageous.

That is so typical of those college professors that are so left wing that they can not even “turn” to the right, which certainly does not represent the majority of college professors teaching today. Individuals like Sandor John seem to have a vendetta against the military and and men like General Petraeus and like to misconstrue the meaning of words and revise history! Calling this man a war criminal, a man that went to Afghanistan to defeat the individuals that helped to launch the deadly plot on September 11, 2001 to strike at the World Trade Center in New York City, how ludicrous, obnoxious, disrespectful, vile and uneducated.

MILITARY CAREER

Born in 1952, General Petraeus went to the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1974 as a distinguished cadet which means he was in the top 5% of his class. Commissioned as an Infantry Officer upon graduation, he then went to Ranger School and completed that demanding course as a Distinguished Honor Graduate. He served in Vincenza, Italy with the 509th Airborne Battalion Combat Team. Upon completion of that assignment, it was off to Fort Stewart, Georgia spending time with the mechanized units of the 24th Mechanized Infantry Division. The General has served with and commanded the 101st Airborne/Air Assault Division, served and jumped with the 82nd Airborne Division and the XVIII Airborne Corps.

Overseas Service

Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti, Operation Desert Spring in Kuwait, and Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia-Herzegovina were all a prelude to 2003 when as commander of the 101st Airborne/Air Assault Division, Major General Petraeus and the Screaming Eagles drove to Baghdad during the Iraq War. His guidance and using classic counterinsurgency methods, he and the 101st Airborne Division provided security for the Iraqi civilians which stabilized the city his troops protected, and he gained the trust and admiration of the Iraqi people.
With Petraeus in charge of Mosul, an Iraqi city with a population of approximately two million people after the fall of Baghdad, he and his Screaming Eagle Troopers of the 101st Airborne/Air Assault Division went to work immediately to give a war torn city some sense of normalcy during chaotic times. Rebuilding the city of Mosul was a priority and that is precisely what happened under the leadership of Major General David Petraeus, the Commanding General of the 101st Airborne at the time. Elections held; jobs created for the Iraqi populace through a public works program and what better way to offset the recruiting of young Iraqi men by the enemy than to deliver the jobs where they can earn a living to feed their families instead of taking arms up against Americans.
The General implemented the political process again by starting elections for the Mosul City Council and building up and training local security forces for the metropolitan area. Anybody that knows anything about the military is familiar with, the long, storied history of the 101st Airborne/Air Assault Division. From its headquarters organized on 2 November 1918 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, the 101st Airborne Division has always been highly professional. When activated on 16 August 1942 as a division in the United States Army, up to it numerous deployments to Afghanistan today, the Screaming Eagles have made America proud. In Mosul under Major General Petraeus, the division could have used mass deadly force to have defeated the enemy.
Instead, they chose to use targeted kinetic operations (specific target audiences with violence), and when he had to use deadly force, General Petraeus and his Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne/Airmobile used it in a most judicious and professional manner. So for this professor at CUNY, Sandor John and his gang of radical and uneducated students to call the General a “war criminal,” shows their lack of knowledge on this issue and subject matter. This professor and his rabble of students are a disgrace to their university and to every educated and rational college instructor and student in this nation.

FIFTEEN MINUTES OF SHAME

Other than the television entertainment program INSIDE EDTION, I do not believe any of the major nightly news networks carried this egregious display of conduct against General David Petraeus by John and his band of uniformed students. Since that was the only display of unruly behavior to make the news, I am wondering if the upper echelon of college officials at City University New York, CUNY, told him how embarrassing he made the school look and to curtail his outlandish and loathsome conduct immediately.
Since Sandor John’s initial ambush assault with his flash mob of illogical students, the public has not been informed of more verbal assaults on one of America’s finest and most decorated general military officers, General David Petraeus. Even when the General, as CIA Director showed his human frailties and had a lapse in judgment and resigned as the head of America’s intelligence agency, he took full responsibility for his actions, blamed no one but himself and tendered his resignation immediately to President Obama so as not to distract from the security issues of the country.
Unlike so many other politicians and bureaucrats today that get caught making mistakes and fail to take responsibility and accountability, the General set the liability for his shortcomings right where it belonged with no excuses, on himself and apologized to the American people. Director Petraeus placed the blame on his shoulders and his shoulders alone. I’ve been in combat in Vietnam, and from what I have read and heard from others about this man during his military days, I would follow him into battle anytime, anywhere! Not only General Petraeus, but his wife, son and daughter have also given back to this country, too.
Only in America, can a college professor and a swarm of students that probably have done nothing for the freedoms they so enjoy each day, would they ambush a man like General David Petraeus and verbally insult and assault him, a man whose service has guaranteed them those freedoms! Let them try the same thing in Afghanistan against the Taliban and Al-Queda and heads would roll! No pun intended.
