Most people are unable to avoid the cost of travel. We need to travel for work, for family commitments, and for our own essential requirements such as shopping.
Travel is part of life, and in order to get around, most of us drive a vehicle. The problem is, the cost of running a car can be extremely expensive, often the largest expense after paying rent or the mortgage. So how can you keep these costs down and save money while remaining on the road?
Car Sharing
If you drive to work, one of the ways you can reduce the cost is by sharing the journey. You need to have people who travel on the same route as you, so look for workmates who live near you. If there isn’t anyone at work who takes the same route, consider asking neighbours and finding out if there is someone who is interested in car sharing with you. Take turns in being the driver for the day, and save money; it’s easy, and it’s a great way to reduce the emissions released into the atmosphere.
Take Public Transport
While you may be attached to your car, that doesn’t mean you need to use it for every journey. Many forms of public transport are cheaper than driving, and you can save even more money if you plan ahead. If you know you have a business meeting, book a train ticket for the day and leave the car at home or your home train station. You could also buy a season train ticket to use for your commute; it saves greatly on the cost of petrol.
Learn About Fuel Economy
If you change your driving habits, you’ll be able to save on the amount of gas you use for each journey. If you really want to drive economically, follow these tips and you’ll certainly notice the difference:

  • Stop starting and stopping aggressively; smooth out the acceleration and your breaking.
  • Stop over-revving the engine.
  • Make sure you always drive in the right gear.
  • Make sure you always drive with your tires at the right pressure.
  • Don’t drive too fast.
  • Always take your car for servicing when it’s due.
  • Stop using the air-conditioning.
  • Empty the boot of your vehicle to keep the car light.
  • Only use the roof rack or box when you need it.
  • Block shift gears when you brake.

Shop Around
The cost of fuel is one of the major expenses that drivers struggle with. Garages don’t all have the same prices for the fuel, so don’t use the one closest to you just because it’s convenient. Shop around and find the best prices, and fill up your tank rather than using small amounts at a time.
Car insurance is another item you’re able to shop around for. There are price comparison sites, but remember, these sites don’t include all the available options, so do your own research. Click here to look around and find a great deal.
