Did you know that while veterans make up just 6% of the U.S. population, they constitute a full 15% or more of the total number of U.S. business owners combined? Furthermore, veterans are twice as likely to pursue business opportunities and other small business options to be business owners as are non-veterans. And even more encouragingly, the five-year success rate among so-called “vetrepreneurs” is significantly higher than the national average.
In recognition of the fact that supporting veterans in their quest to become business owners is not only the right thing to do but that it actually serves to grow the nation’s economy, the Citi Salutes: Realizing Your Dream Program works closely with leading nonprofits and public agencies. It’s main goal? To offer aspiring and existing vetrepreneurs the tools, resources and strong networks of support they and their families need most to be successful.
Currently underway is Citi Salutes’ first ever Realizing Your Dream Business Competition for veterans and their families who either have a great idea for a new business or who have a vision to take their current business to the next level. At stake? The possibility of winning $25,000 to launch or grow your venture!
All it takes to be considered for this round is to submit a business plan by November 8, 2013. Potential applicants who would like a sounding board for their ideas or who need assistance in preparing their applications for maximum effectiveness are encouraged to contact either Operation Boots to Business, or for women veterans specifically, V-WISE (Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship).
Finalists will present their business plans before an expert panel in January 2014, and a dozen winners will take home combined prizes in the amount of $130,000 funded by Citi Foundation. Additionally, participants will be supported through classes, webinars, live Google hangouts and one-on-one sessions designed to help them achieve their business ownership goals.
