Retirement is typically viewed as a time for rest and relaxation, however the reality is often very different for military retirees. With the average age for retirement in the military being 42, most military personnel are still in the job market, and so require homes in locations that have available jobs, as well as good healthcare and the best military benefits.
This article takes a look at a few of the top states for veterans to retire in, and explains why they are ideal.  Should you be looking for CT real estate or a home in the Midwest?  Keep reading to find out.

Wyoming

Wyoming was recently voted the best state for veteran retirement according to the Fiscal Times.  Traditionally a cowboy state, around 10% of the Wyoming population is made up of veterans.  It has the highest number of veteran health facilities in the country, low housing costs, and no tax on a pensionable income.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma is the ideal retirement state for vets who want to find a job after leaving the military.  The state is regularly in need of workers with military skills, and a high number of jobs are regularly advertised.  Oklahoma City is also home to a huge number of veteran owned businesses, making it the ideal place to live if you want to try something new after leaving the military.  The cost of living and housing is also more affordable than it is in most other states.

Montana

Another popular state for veterans who want to start businesses is Montana.  With the most veteran owned businesses in the country, the state also provides unemployment compensation for vets who are struggling to find work after leaving the military.  Montana has the highest number of veterans in any state, and also has the most VA healthcare facilities per veteran.

Texas

Texas is one of the best states to retire in, in the south of the United States.  It’s especially ideal for veterans who want to return to education and get a degree, as it has some of the best universities in the country.  Military and VA facilities can be found throughout the state, unemployment is low, and the cost of living is cheaper than most places in the country.

Alaska

Alaska is one of the few states where retirement pay is completely free from tax, making it a popular choice with many veterans.  It also has an above average pay of $18 per hour, and affordable housing, making it a good choice for vets who want to enter into the workforce.  The job centres in the state offer priority services to veterans and their spouses to help them find work through referrals and job development.  The quality of life for Alaska residents is also high, with the state currently ranking in 15th place.
When choosing a place to retire, veterans need to look at more than just where friends and family are located.  Work prospects, pension tax, and healthcare facilities should all be considered.
