For two and one-half years, the ROBLEY REX VA MEDICAL CENTER in Louisville, Kentucky has been giving me the run-around, brush-off and line of bovine scatology about fee basis chiropractic visits. A select few of those VA employees in ADMINSRATION holding positions to authorize such treatments have lied and denied me the much-needed care. I have spoken with several other Veterans that have experienced the same storyline from this VA Medical Center that Veterans can only receive to one (1) chiropractic visit per month on a fee-basis program.

During these past 24 months, being in pain most of the time, I have followed the chain-of-command trying to obtain extra chiropractic visits when needed. From getting a CONSULTS with my Primary Care Physician for additional chiropractic visits, denied, then attempting to get the director of my VA Clinic to intercede on my behalf, extra chiropractic treatments denied. Other Veterans that are in the throes of severe pain from degenerative disc disease are experiencing the same underhanded tactics from the Administration of this particular VA Hospital when it comes to “fee basis” chiropractic care.

It seems when it comes to specific medical treatments the Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Louisville, Kentucky does not offer and must contract out on a “fee basis” payment, in the case of chiropractic care, there is constant denial of needed treatment. The ADMINISTRATION of this VA facility acts as though it is their personal money, coming out of their wallets and purses as necessary extra chiropractic care for pain relief is consistently denied! I believe the ADMINISTRATION is putting on paper the needs of Veterans are being met when chiropractic care is needed and requested, currently one visit per month. In reality, Veterans like myself, with severe back pain from degenerative disc disease need more than one chiropractic visit a month at times when “flair-ups” of back pain occur. I do not think the number of denials for pain relief from “fee-basis” chiropractic care is shown on paper, a ploy to make this VA medical facility look good to the Department Of Veterans Affairs in Washington, DC.

I finally had enough of the ADMINISTRATION at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center with the constant denials for chiropractic are for pain relief and contacted my Representative in Congress, the Honorable Brett Guthrie. Something amazing occurred after an official inquiry by Congressman Guthrie, a doctor from this VA facility called me personally and told me I could receive extra chiropractic visits for my pain. In the next sentence, this doctor said all I had to do was get a consult from my PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN to obtain these treatments. I let this doctor finish, and when finished with his BOVINE SCATOLOGY, I told him I had gone to my PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN to get the extra treatments. I also explained to this doctor the hassle and constant denials for the past 24 months, and the doctor did not have an answer why this happened! The bottom line here, when I contacted Representative Guthrie and took this problem out of the “in-house” coverup, this VA facility changed their tune dramatically!

I had to go back to my PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN again, and a written consult was not good enough for the ADMINISTRATION at the VA Medical Center in Louisville. My doctor ordered extra chiropractic care visits for this “flair-up” of severe pain, gave me an injection for the pain and prescribed a gel to apply for the pain. Here it is nine days after the consult with the Primary Care Physician, and I am still waiting for business office to authorize these extra chiropractic care visits. When I sent a message to this doctor about the delay, I was informed the business office will permit the treatments in the order in which these requests were received. Nothing from this doctor about checking to see where I am on the list nor, asking me nothing about my level of pain at the moment.

I did receive a pamphlet from the Director of this VA Medical Center, one Martin Traxler, asking me to comment on my latest interaction with the facility and I certainly will submit my remarks and mail it back to him, along with a copy to the Secretary Of Veterans Affairs, Robert McDonald. This VA facility has manipulated, lied to and denied Veterans with severe and chronic degenerative disc disease much need chiropractic care for pain relief. I plan on continuing my quest to secure the treatment I have been denied, along with other Veterans in dire need of pain relief. I urge all Veterans that have experienced the same shenanigans involving “fee-basis” chiropractic care from the Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Louisville, Kentucky to contact their Senator or Representative in Congress to stop this “cooking of the books.” The more Congressional inquiries this VA facility receives, the sooner this withholding of medical care by the ADMINISTRATION of this hospital will be exposed. The sooner it is brought to light and the desk of the Secretary Of Veterans Affairs, the Honorable Robert McDonald, those responsible will either be fired or reprimanded and Veterans will get the care they deserve and bought and paid for by virtue of their honorable service to America!
