Resident veterans and staff at the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home teamed together over the last few months to help those who once served beside them.
They raised more than $300 and Wednesday gave it to the Volunteers of America of North Louisiana to help with the VOA’s Rural Veterans Health Outreach.
“We have four wings here,” social worker Laura Gregorio said as about a half dozen veteran residents gathered for a regular meeting in the home’s Sports Lounge, site of the presentation. “We got a large clear plastic box and each week we would put it in a different wing. The money came from a combination of residents, guests and staff, we don’t really know. It was an anonymous box.”
The program is open to all veterans who live in the 14 north Louisiana parishes, nine Texas counties and five Arkansas counties served by Overton Brooks VA Medical Center. The program provides a number of services, mainly targeted at those transitioning from active duty to civilian life. These range from in-home visits and case management to medication management and physical and mental health care.
