VT announces a “working partnership” with Brighton College and its affiliates.  Most of what is offered will be direct employment related, medical, paralegal, technical sales, the programs are listed below.  Our concern at VT is the well being and economic security of our staff and readers.  Toward this end, we see this partnership as providing a “safe haven” for those who have been putting off getting back to school.

Sometimes it is a kid who is stalled, stuck and unable to dig his or her way out.  Education isn’t the perfect answer all the time but it is an answer.  By education, I mean passing on knowledge, core competencies that build confidence and trust in one’s own capabilities.  Brighton is not an “easy” school.  None of us need “easy.”

Why VT and Brighton

VT is notorious for avoiding affiliations and product endorsements.  We get charities and law firms who want to cherry pick the VT demographic, veterans and their families.  We learned about Brighton College from staffers who teach there.  Online learning has strong advantages and disadvantages as well with new colleges coming out of the woodwork promising an educating but delivering less.  Brighton has been something very different.

We are looking to Brighton for their flexible programs for veterans and military families.  We have two basic groups at VT, those with degrees, often advanced degrees but limited career pathing as “times have changed” and those who have “stalled” as it were.  Sometimes just “getting back to school” can change everything.

There is one other factor we look at as well, the extra attention vets sometimes need, particularly combat vets, help that is more available at Brighton than at most “brick and mortar” schools.  What is vital is that programs are all “win” and not “win/lose.”   There are so many ways you can get knocked out of the box, not just deployments but life, jobs, shift changes, kids and stress.  We do know stress.

If pushed to just get through a class the education can sometimes become secondary to an immersive learning experience.  This is where I have watched online learning and, in particular, Brighton College, shine.
