The Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, once limited the terms of “marriage” and “spouse” to opposite-sex couples. On June 26, 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that DOMA is unconstitutional.
Recently, it was announced that all VA lenders have the ability to review VA home loan applications for same-sex married couples.
On June 26, 2015, the United States lifted all bans on gay marriage. Same-sex couples could no longer be denied marriage licenses in any state. Before the ban was lifted, gay couples in many states were denied the sharing of medical services, VA disability pay, and VA home loans. Now, all veterans, active military, and their loved ones will be entitled to the VA benefits they deserve. Same-sex surviving spouses of veterans are eligible for the VA home loan as well.
The VA home loan provides veterans with lower interest rates, lower monthly costs, and $0 down payments in most cases. There are also no prepayment penalties or mortgage premiums. Financing the funding fee and qualifying for a home loan is much easier with the VA home loan.
To be eligible for a VA loan, the veteran must have been honorably discharged. In most cases, the credit score requirement is only 580, which is subject to underwriter approval.
