TEHRAN (FNA) – Iran asked Turkey not to violate the neighboring states’ sovereignty under the pretext of fighting against terrorism after Ankara launched airstrikes on the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) bases in Iraqi Kurdistan.

“Firstly, I am willing to underline that Tehran and Ankara enjoy strategic relations and the Islamic Republic of Iran attaches importance to Turkey’s security but we don’t support the moves that violate the sovereignty of Turkey’s neighbors,” Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian said in an interview with the Iran-based Arabic-language al-Alam news channel on Monday.

Stressing that any campaign against terrorism and fight against the ISIL by Turkey or any other regional state should be launched through coordination with the Syrian and Iraqi governments, he said, “Countries shouldn’t adopt actions that violate the neighboring states’ territorial integrity and sovereignty.”

Turkey conducted airstrikes against the PKK bases in Iraqi Kurdistan on Friday night and Saturday morning which resulted in the deaths of several civilians.

Local sources said that the Turkish fighter jets bombed the villages of Zargalie and Wartie near Rawanduz in Erbil Province in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Six villagers, including women, were reportedly killed, as well as three PKK fighters. Injured civilians were taken to Soran hospital for treatment.

The airstrikes were among the heaviest in the area since Turkey started air operations against the PKK on July 24.

Amanj Wartie, a Kurdish journalist and relative of five victims of the bombing said that about 12 people, including PKK fighters were killed and injured in the strikes. Later reports said 10 of the victims were civilians.
