Rag Radio: Palestine, Zionism and Human Rights

Eve Spangler is a sociologist and a human and civil rights activist. Her new book is Understanding Israel/Palestine: Race, Nation, and Human Rights in the Conflict.

For the last decade, Dr. Spangler’s work has focused on the Israel/Palestine conflict. Eva believes that the problem in this conflict “is Zionism, not religion, not even nationalism per se,” and says she is “making an argument for human rights to be the bedrock of the quest for a just and sustainable peace, going forward.”

According to Alice Rothchild, Spangler’s book “takes us on a brave and intimate journey into the consequences of Jewish privilege and Jewish victimhood, the agendas of imperial superpowers, and the Palestinian struggle for self-determination.”

Dr. Spangler graduated summa cum laude from Brooklyn College, received her MA from Yale, and her Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts. She served as Assistant Chair of the Boston College Department of Sociology and director of the department’s graduate program. Eva’s main interests concern human rights in diverse settings, ranging from Israel/Palestine to corporate workplaces. In her previous work, she focused on occupational safety and health, particularly for women.
