For the first time in its 23-year history, the Hampden County Correctional Center Chapter of American Veterans in Prisons decided to donate money from its annual Walk-A-Thon to the Toy for Joy fund, sponsored by the Salvation Army, The Republican and MassLive.com
At their Veterans Day dinner held at the Hampden County Correctional Center, a group of 12 inmates who are veterans donated a $400 check to The Republican for the 93rd Toy for Joy fund drive, which has set a goal of raising $150,000 by Dec. 24 to provide holiday gifts to children in need in the Pioneer Valley.
“Although we are incarcerated, we are giving back to the community,” said Daniel Pimentel, an inmate and a spokesman for the group.
He said the group decided to donate to the Toy for Joy fund this year “because most of us are fathers.”
