Worthington Elementary fifth-grader Ava Guerra wasn’t looking for attention when she offered to give up a few of her Christmas presents this year to brighten some veterans’ holiday season — she just wanted to make them happy.
Guerra, along with her mother, Stacy Hazelton, and brother, Grayson, used to take part in a Red Cross program that collected Christmas cards and then delivered them to veterans at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center. According to her teacher, Treva Baker, when Guerra learned that the program was not available to take part in this year, the 10-year-old decided to do something about it herself.
“Ava came in and said, ‘Thank you, Ms. Baker, because I was really upset (the program was not taking place this year) and when I found out, I asked my mom if we could find a way to do that and if she didn’t buy me a couple presents this year, I would give up a couple presents if she could find a way for me to get to do the Christmas cards this year for the VA patients,'” Baker recalled.
