Worthington Elementary fifth-grader Ava Guerra wasn’t looking for attention when she offered to give up a few of her Christmas presents this year to brighten some veterans’ holiday season — she just wanted to make them happy.
Guerra, along with her mother, Stacy Hazelton, and brother, Grayson, used to take part in a Red Cross program that collected Christmas cards and then delivered them to veterans at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center. “Ava came in and said, ‘Thank you, Ms. Baker, because I was really upset (the program was not taking place this year) and when I found out, I asked my mom if we could find a way to do that and if she didn’t buy me a couple presents this year, I would give up a couple presents if she could find a way for me to get to do the Christmas cards this year for the VA patients,'” Baker recalled.
