Jason Allen Matson, 37, died from a heart attack at his home in Anchorage on Sept. 6, 2009. A celebration of life will be at noon Sunday at the VFW, 9191 Old Seward Highway, No. 9. Jason was born March 30, 1972, in Redding, Calif., but was raised in Alaska from the age of 7. He graduated from Bartlett High School in 1990. He joined the Marines directly after high school and served in the Persian Gulf War, in Southwest Asia and in Somalia, where he received many awards in his short term in the service. He returned to work in construction with his stepfather, Vernon Osborn, for several years. He left Alaska for a short time but his love for his family and the outdoors brought him back. He then began a new trade in engine mechanics. Jason learned the love of fishing at a very young age and fished and hunted all around the state. He loved snowmachining and all that Alaska had to offer. Jason was happiest with a fishing rod in his hand and could never be "outfished." Jason is survived by his two daughters, Janelle and Amy Matson in Boise, Idaho; his mother, Mary Osborn; stepfather, Vernon Osborn; and father, Wayne Matson in Georgia; sisters, Stacy Stowe and Karley Tetz; and brother, Dayton Osborn and his girlfriend, Lisa Milefski. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Bob Tharp and Maxine Narry, and paternal grandmother, Pearl Matson. His family wrote: "He will be missed by his longtime fishing and hunting friends from in and outside of Alaska.. His sudden death has left us all feeling shocked and saddened. His ashes will be spread next summer at his favorite fishing sites." A college beneficiary fund has been established for his daughters at Alaska USA Federal Credit Union, account 1481364.

Christopher J. Lavelle  
M/Sgt. Christopher J. Lavelle, USAF, Ret., 57
DOVER – Christopher J. Lavelle, 57, of Dover, died Sept. 14, 2009, suddenly at his residence. Born in San Francisco, Calif., he was the son of John F. and Jeanne Wallin Lavelle. Mr. Lavelle served in the U.S. Air Force for over 22 years and was a Vietnam and Desert Storm Veteran retiring in 1992. At the time of his death Mr. Lavelle was serving as a Dispatcher with the City of Dover Electric Dept. He was a member of Holy Cross Church in Dover, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the American Legion and was a Past Commander of the Dover Civil Air Patrol Squadron. In his quieter moments he enjoyed Model Rail Roading and flew Model Air Planes. Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Theresa L. Yates Lavelle of Dover; two sons, Shane P. Lavelle of Absecon, N.J., and Jonathan E. Lavelle of Wilmington; and two sisters, Katherine Lavelle of Woburn, Mass., and Amy Smart of Mexico City, Mexico. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday at the Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso, 1175 S. State St., Dover. A Memorial Mass will be offered at a later date in St. Barbara Catholic Church in Woburn, Mass.

Adolfo Benavidez
ADOLFO BENAVIDEZ Adolfo Genaro Benavidez, 37, of Las Vegas, passed away Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009. He was born Dec. 26, 1971, in San Francisco. Adolfo was a waste disposal maintenance manager and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during Desert Storm. He is survived by his one true love and wife, Patricia; beautiful daughters, Alana and Talia; dear sister, Kelly; loving parents, Genaro and Amelia; and by many friends and family who will miss him greatly. "God Bless his son, Adolfo." Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Palm Mortuary, 6701 N. Jones Blvd. Graveside service will be at 10:40 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in Boulder City. There will be a memorial service following at 1 p.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 5485 E. Charleston Blvd.
 
Lieutenant Colonel Phillip Abner Merritt  
Pembroke
Lieutenant Colonel Phillip Abner Merritt, age 53 died Saturday Sept. 5, 2009 at his home.
Mr. Merritt was a retired senior aviator with the U.S. Army with over 20 years of service. He flew Black Hawk helicopters and served in operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm and in Iraq during the global war on terrorism. His duty stations included Korea; Fort Ord, CA; Fort Bragg; and Kaiserlautern, Germany. Mr. Merritt was also the recipient of the Bronze Star. Since retirement, he served as staff specialist at headquarters 6th Brigade of the U.S. Army Cadet Command. Mr. Merritt was an avid fisherman and enjoyed range shooting and traveling.
Surivors include his wife Teri L. Merritt of Pembroke; one son Phillip K. Merritt of Pembroke; one daughter Sarah N. Merritt of Pembroke; two stepsons Michael Bibb of Pembroke and Christopher Torigian of California; one brother Charles Merritt of North Carolina; and two step grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 10 A.M. Thursday, Sept. 10, in the chapel of Georgia Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Glennville with Dr. Jim Correll officiating.

Marguarite Rose (Landino) Basile  
MARGUARITE ROSE (LANDINO) BASILE Marguarite Rose (Landino) Basile Marge was called home on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 after a long illness. Marguerite Rose (Landino) Basile is the wife of John Basile and daughter of the late Salvatore Landino and Mary Landino. Marge was born in New Haven, CT and graduated from East Haven H.S. She leaves a son Edward Lanouette of North Haven, CT and a daughter, Michelle Garcia of Fort Pierce, FL and two grand children Lil Joey Garcia and Kameron Garcia. She also has two step daughters, Virginia Breer and Beth McGrath both of VT. As well as two step grandchildren, Alicia and Joseph Greer. She also had two sisters that predeceased her, Barbara Muelo and Joanne Minie. She leaves 3 sisters, Marie Socco, Sally Stone and Cynthia Vece and 15 nieces and nephews. Marge retired from the Federal Government in 1994 where she was chief of Military personnel and training at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, MA. and was an Air Force Chief Master Sargent in the A. F Reserves and served on active duty during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. She moved to Vero Beach with her husband in 1994. She worked at St. Peters Academy until May 2008 as the Administrative Assistant. Marge was an avid bowler and loved gardening. The true love of her life was her two grand babies and life itself. Clarence Saunders  
Clarence "Roscoe" Mark Saunders, 46, of Goodyear, Ariz., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, at his residence unexpectedly in his sleep. He was born April 25, 1963, in Radford, Va. He was a SPC in the U.S. Army as a combat field medic during Desert Storm. He was also a member of the Church of Christ/Christian Church. He is survived by his parents, Carl and Margaret Saunders of Morganton; his sister, Martha Saunders Capaldini and her husband, James, of Morganton; his children, Carrie, Crystal and Billy Saunders of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; and nephews, Jesse, David and Braydon Capaldini of Morganton. A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Chesterfield Church of Christ on Wednesday. Gregory Hall  
Mr. Gregory James Hall, 40, of Lenoir died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009. Born May 5, 1969, in Caldwell County, Mr. Hall was a son of James J. and Ruby C. Hall of Lenoir and the husband of Cynthia C. Hall of the home. Gregory was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during Desert Storm, and worked for the Department of Corrections in Morganton. He was a volunteer with the Patterson Fire Department and was chief of Lenoir Rescue for several years. Surviving, other than his wife and parents, are four children, Christian Lee Hall and wife, Amanda, Erica Lee Bentley, Brooke Ciara Hall and Tyler James Hall, all of Lenoir; two sisters, Penny Lofgren and husband, Jim, of Lenoir and Barbie Hall of Ferguson; two granddaughters, Lilly Christine Hall and Madison Lee Keller, both of Lenoir; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Unity Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Dula officiating. Military honors will be observed. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m., prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Aaron G. Skilbred SUFFOLK – Aaron George "Scoop" Skilbred, 39, of Suffolk, passed away Sept. 7, 2009, due to a vehicular accident. He was born in Sparta, Wis. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and Desert Storm. He was an electronic technician subcontractor for System Tech Forum. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Melissa Jean Skilbred; daughter, Kayla N. Skilbred; sons, Brandon A. Skilbred and Javin A. Skilbred; father and mother, George Harvard and Marilyn Accola Skilbred; sisters, Wanda Skilbred, Rebecca Hauersperger, Heidi Massey; brothers, Dewey, Mark, Scott, and Clifton Skilbred; numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held Friday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m. at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory, 3515 Robs Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434. Burial will follow in Holly Lawn Cemetery. McCurry, age 43, of Chardon, Ohio, passed away Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009.He was born Jan. 20, 1966, in Madison, Ohio and had been a lifelong area resident.Jim was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Iraq during Desert Storm. LIGHT Larry T. Light, 63, of Centertown, Mo.., passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at University Hospital in Columbia, Mo. He was born on August 29, 1946, in Jefferson City, Mo., the son of Robert and Ruby (Higgins) Light. On March 29, 1969, he married Connie Garcia who survives of the home. Larry was a 1964 graduate of California High School. He was a computer operations manager and worked for Como Electric Co-op, Farm Bureau and H E B Grocery Co. in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War and also Desert Storm. Larry enjoyed quail hunting, deer hunting and his German Shorthair dogs. Other survivors include: his mother, Ruby Light of California, Mo.; two sons, Ronald Thomas Light and wife Johnonda of Paris, Mo., and Wesley Thomas Light and wife Katie of California, Mo.; one brother, Kevin Light and wife Lisa of Centertown, Mo.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two nieces; and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Light; and one grandchild, Gabriel Thomas Light. Robert E. "Butch" Nelson Sr.  
BLUEFIELD — Robert E. "Butch" Nelson, Sr., 63, of 1913 Cherrywood Lane, passed away Tuesday September 1, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born April 25, 1946 in Bastian, Va., he was a son of the late Earl F. Nelson and Thelma Ann Sarver Catron Nelson. He was of the Methodist faith. Mr. Nelson spent ten years in the Marine Corps and 20 years in the Army and Army Reserve where he served with the Military Police. He was a veteran of both Vietnam and Desert Shield/Desert Storm and has dedicated most of his life to the protection and freedom of our country and its citizens. He was an automotive technician at Richardson Motors, Ercoline Nissan and Cole Motor Group. He was an avid muzzleloader and competed in muzzle loading competitions. Mr. Nelson was a member of the Fort Witten Long Rifle Association and was an avid collector. He loved to fish with his grandson. He was always willing to help those who needed it and he was a very kind-hearted man. He loved his grandchildren and his cats. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Hubert A. Spencer and Richard Odell. Survivors include his wife, Janet Stamper Nelson of the home; two children, Robert E. Nelson, Jr. and his wife Robbi of Bluefield and Amy Michelle Nelson Gilpin of Green Valley; three siblings, John W. Catron and his wife Nell of Bastian, Va., Elsie L. Spencer of Bluefield, W.Va. and Donald B. Nelson and his wife Carroll of Princeton; sisters-in-law, Janie Odell, Wanda Grimm and Barbara Neal and her companion Allen; six grandchildren, Erin Brooke Schelffler and her husband Joshua, Dustin Chase Blankenship, Matthew David Gilpin, Christopher Andrew Gilpin and Robert Nathaniel Haydan Nelson, and Andrew G. Simon; one great-grandson, Caiden Cox; one great-granddaughter, Kayden Grace Schelffler; numerous nieces and nephews; and his loving cat, Sadi.  Akers, LT. Col. Dr. Robert Oakman Dr. Robert Oakman Akers passed away peacefully on Tuesday Sept. 8 in a local Arlington hospital. Funeral Service: 1:00 p.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church 401 W. Church St. Grand Prairie. Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Moore Funeral Home, Arlington. Interment: Moore Memorial Gardens, Arlington. Robert was born Nov. 2, 1920 in San Francisco, CA. He held a Bachelor Degree from Texas Tech. in Lubbock and Doctorate from Carver Chiropractic College in Oklahoma City. World War II was in full force. He entered the United States Air Force for training which was followed by immediate deployment. Lt. Col. Akers served his country through active service through six wars; WWII, Vietnam, Korean, two Conflicts and Desert Storm. When it came time for discharge, as a civilian he immediately was "grabbed up" by armed-forces companies- esp. Lockheed and Redifusion and served flying all over the world. Lt. Col. Dr. Robert O. Akers was a true patriot all his life. He served under two flags; Old Glory and the "Old Rugged Cross" of Jesus Christ. From 1945 to his home-going he served as deacon, teacher and filled any job needed at Calvary Baptist in Grand Prairie. Survivors: Wife of 66 years, Katie; daughter, Katrina and husband Terry Pawley; four sisters-in-laws, Louise Oldman of Grand Prairie, Gloria Schneider of Ft. Gary W. Hardy II
  
Gary W. Hardy II, 39, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2009. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of Carol-Ann (Gentile) and Richard A. Pawlak of Niagara Falls, NY and Gary W. Hardy of Lewiston, NY.Gary attended Niagara County Community College in Sanborn, NY, where he received an Associate Degree in Nursing. He later received his Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Daemen College in Buffalo, NY and was currently working on his Masters Degree in Neonatal Nurse Practitioner from South Alabama University. Gary devoted most of his life to the United States Military. He first joined the United States Army in 1987 and was stationed in Ft. Drum, NY, Ft. Bragg, NC, Germany, Korea, Somalia, Iraq and Haiti. He was involved in Operation Desert Storm as a paratrooper and combat infantry. He was honorably discharged in 1997. Gary later enlisted in the United States Navy in 2002, and was stationed in Road Island and Bethesda, MD and also served in Operation Iraqi Freedom until his honorable discharge in 2006. He was currently serving in the Army National Guard. Gary was a member of the Combat Infantry Men’s Association and in his spare time enjoyed sky diving and collecting military items. In addition to his parents, he is also survived by his children, Gary Hardy III, Cody S. Hardy, Coby Hardy, Noah Hardy and Alexandria Hardy; his half-sister, Bethany Hannaford; step-sisters, Jennifer (Greg) Pokoj, Michelle Stepanowicz, and Kim (Robert) Lewis; and his step-brother, Mark Huffman. He was the grandson of, Samuel A. (late Maud) Gentile of Niagara Falls, NY, Richard Z. and Mary Pawlak of Niagara Falls, NY and late Kenneth and Jessie Hardy. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.Friends may call on Monday from 2-5 and 7-9 PM at the M.J. Chad Edward Kinney Chad Edward Kinney (Cpl. Dothan Police Dept.), of Cowarts, AL passed away on Monday, September 8, 2009 at his residence. He was 38. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2009 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain David Willis officiating. Burial with Dothan Police Department Honors will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 1 until 3 p.m. Chad Kinney was born on March 26, 1971 in California and lived the early years of his life there. He joined the U.S. Army at the age of 18 and served our country in Desert Storm. He was stationed in Ft. Benning in Georgia prior to moving to Dothan in 1993. Chad joined the Dothan Police Department as an officer in 1997 and was a Corporal in the K-9 Unit for the past 10 years. Survivors include his wife, Kelli Kinney of Dothan; his son, Jack Kinney and two daughters, Erin and Mary Ashley Kinney all of Dothan; his father, Harry Kinney and his wife Marlene of California; his grandfather, Boots Kewley of California; his brother, Anthony Kinney of Washington; an aunt and uncle, Dave and Vicki Marshall of , California; and his cousins, Kim Vaughn and Katie Marshall of California. ROBERT MERWIN LEYSE
Robert Merwin Leyse Dr. Bob After a lengthy illness, Dr. Bob passed peacefully in his sleep, September 2, 2009. He was born in Chicago, October 1, 1928. He lived in St. Louis, MO, where he graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in 1954. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army, Fort Lewis from 1955-1957. He settled his family in Bellevue and graduated from University of Washington surgical program in 1963. He boarded thoracic surgery. He practiced medicine in Bellevue, WA where he was on staff at Overlake Hospital. He remained active in teaching at UW Medical School until he left private practice and became an officer in the US Navy Medical Reserve, participating in Desert Storm. He retired and moved to Tacoma, where he married Dyann McLeod. Bob was a member of Fircrest Golf Club. Bob is survived by wife Dyann, three sons Robb of Bellevue, WA, David (Layna) of Burbank, CA, and Scott of Deer Valley, UT. Bob had a great relationship with Dyann’s family; three sons Mike McLeod (Theresa), Bruce McLeod, and John McLeod, as well as four grandchildren Michael, Annie, Kelsey, and Tatum. He was loved and will be missed. We are very thankful to the staff for the special care Dr. Bob was given at the Weatherly Inn and the care and support Franciscan Hospice provided not only to Bob, but family as well. A memorial service and reception will be held at a later date. Barry Lee Moseley
LANDIS – Barry Lee Moseley, 39, of Landis, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, at Rowan Regional Medical in Salisbury.  Born March 27, 1970, in Cabarrus County, Barry was the son of the late Rufus William "Bill" Moseley and the late Anna Rozzelle Moseley. He graduated from South Rowan High School in 1988 and worked for UPS for 20 years as a driver. He had served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Desert Storm. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Landis and loved his family.
Survivors included his wife, Karen Rhyne Moseley; children Olivia Breanne Moseley of Raleigh, Tristen and Trinity Moseley of Concord; stepdaughter Kaylee Schoonmaker and stepson Will Schoonmaker, both of Landis; brothers Steven Moseley and wife Anna of Landis, Doug Moseley and wife Lori and niece Kayla of Concord; a sister, Patti Osborne and husband David of Salisbury; and a niece, Stephanie of High Point.  Visitation and Service: Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Friday at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home in Landis with the service on Saturday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Landis. The Rev. Bev Coppley will be officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park in China Grove.

Paul Raymond Schoenfelder  
SCHOENFELDER, Paul Raymond, 45, passed away September 7, 2009, in Cabot, Ark. Paul was a graduate of Leto High School and an U.S. Air Force retiree who served during Operation Desert Storm. Paul is survived by his daughter, Delin LaPointe of Cabot, Ark.; and grandson, Chris, his mother, Rosemarie Butler-Vomacka and her husband, Bob Vomacka of Gainesville, Fla.; his sister, Donna and her husband, Marco Gasparro of San Colombano al Lambro, Italy and nieces Alexia and Francesca and nephew, Leonardo all of Italy. Services were conducted in Cabot, Ark. September 10. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends send contributions to the American National Kidney Foundation.
 
Matthew Stevenson Jr. 
Matthew Stevenson Jr. Matthew Stevenson, Jr. was born March 17, 1968 in Sikeston, MO to Matthew, Sr. and Annie Stevenson. He had been a member of Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church in Chicago, IL. where he was baptized in 1974. Matthew attended and graduated in the Chicago Public Schools District. He received scholarships and awards for his athletic ability in basketball but decided to serve his country by entering the U.S. Army. He served 21 years in the military and during these years he had a tour in Desert Storm where he received a Bronze Star for Valor as well as for Bosnia and two tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Matthew remained active duty until his untimely death. He met and married Fedelia Franklin while he was in the military, who he vowed to love and cherish always. Matthew was a devoted husband, father, son and brother who loved his children, Anthony, Matthew III, Devin and baby girl Monica, dearly. Matthew was affectionately known as ‘Jr.’ by his family and ‘Steve’ by his military family. He loved cooking, playing basketball and making everyone feel at home and part of his family always. Matthew leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Fedelia; his children, Anthony, Matthew III (Kamilah), Devon and Monica; parents, Matthew and Annie Stevenson; sisters, Patricia (Virgil) Jarrett and Mary Stevenson; grandchildren, Amyia, Naila Marai (aka Moo Moo) and Anthony Kareem Stevenson Jr.; in-laws, William and Nancy Franklin; sisters-in-law, Sandra Franklin, Cynthia Franklin and Phyllis (Richard) Thigpen, special nephew, Chris Stevenson; special nieces Janay Gardner and Quanience Thigpen; special brothers, Demetrius Daniels, Andre Keen, SFC John Coleman, Craig Davis, special sister, Yoruba Cook; host of cousins, aunts, uncles and many friends. He was preceded in death by both his paternal and maternal grandparents. Visitation will be held Friday September 11, 2009 at All Nations Worship Assembly Church in Chicago from 6-8pm. Robert Toupin
Robert Edward Toupin – Rockledge – Robert Edward Toupin, "Just Bob", died unexpectedly Friday, September 11, 2009. Bob is survived by his wife, Colleen; his children, Renee Toupin and Robert Toupin; his parents, Ronald and Doris Toupin; his brother, Ronald Toupin Jr.; his sister, Richele Ford; his step-children and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a graduate of Florida Institute of Technology and received his masters from Webster. Bob served in the United States Army Field Artillery until he retired in 2003. He was a master parachutist and participated in Desert Storm.. Bob worked at DRS. He was a proud member of Spirit Riders. His other hobbies included reading, scuba diving and traveling. He was a member of the Rockledge Church of the Nazarene, 651 Barnes, Blvd., Rockledge, FL 32955 and a memorial service will be held there at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 19, 2009.
 
Paul A. Caputi
Paul A. Caputi of Fitchburg, Marine vet; 44 FITCHBURG Paul A. Caputi, 44, of Fitchburg, died Thursday, September 3, in Health Alliance Leominster Hospital, after a brief illness. He was born December 3, 1964, in Fitchburg, son of the late Arthur Caputi. Mr. Caputi graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1983, where he played football. He later coached Pop Warner Football. Sgt. Caputi served in the United States Marine Corps and participated in Operation Desert Shield/Storm and earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Southeast Asia Service Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and the Combat Action Ribbon. Mr. Caputi was a Corrections Officer for Worcester County. He was a very hard worker. He was a member of the British American Club, loved playing darts, and was a big Patriots fan. He was a wonderful father, husband, brother, and uncle. He leaves his wife of 9 years, Pamela (Gaines) Caputi; his son, Robert Jordan of Fitchburg; two brothers, Arthur Caputi and his wife, Casey of Fitchburg, and Michael Caputi and his wife, Patricia of Winchendon; one sister, Theresa Caputi of Fitchburg; many nieces and nephews; one great niece; and one great nephew. CAPUTI The funeral will be held Tuesday, September 8, from Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg, with a Mass at 10:00 A.M. at Saint Anthony de Padua Church, Salem St., Fitchburg. Burial will follow in Saint Bernard’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday, September 7, from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. in the funeral home.
 
Donald "Shane" Bradley  
, 39, passed away on Friday evening, Sept. 4, 2009. He was born on Jan. 7, 1970 in Cleburne, Texas. He attended school in Stephenville, Texas, and Jackson, Ala. Shane served his country in the U.S. Navy and was a Gulf War Veteran. He lived with his family in St. Augustine, and was currently employed at First Coast Honda. He was a loving husband and wonderful father. He will be missed more than words could ever say.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Shelly; his son, Austen, 19; his daughter, Morgan, 13; and a daughter-in-law, Sarah. He is also survived by his father and step-mother: George and Mildred Bradley of Jackson, Ala.; his mother, Darlene Dowell of Stephenville, Texas; two sisters, Denise Underwood of Tulsa, Okla., and Michelle Quinn of Brady, Texas; five step-brothers; and a large number of extended family and friends. His memory will be cherished forever.  Visitation will be Wednesday, Sept. 9, from 6 to 7 p.m. with the Funeral Service beginning at 7 p.m. at Craig Funeral Home.  Arrangements by Craig Funeral Home Crematory Memorial Park.
 
Thomas Francis "Tom" Veit  
Graveside services for Thomas Francis "Tom" Veit, 49, of Corydon, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at New Albany National Cemetery, New Albany. He died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at Clark Memorial Hospital, Jeffersonville. He was born in New Albany Feb. 8, 1960, to the late William C., Jr. and Helen Sauerheber Veit. He was an Army veteran of the first Persian Gulf War and was employed in the construction and concrete trade. He was a loving brother and a good friend.Survivors include his brothers, William L. Veit of New Albany, John R. Veit of Pace, Fla., Richard J. Veit and his wife, Tiffany, of New Albany, and Charles E. Veit of Corydon; sister, Kathryn Dilks and her husband, John, of Tallahassee, Fla.; aunts, Virginia Fisher and Barbara Notman; several cousins; and many nieces and nephews.Cremation was chosen at Kraft Funeral Services, Spring Street Chapel, New Albany. Larry L. Fines
LARRY L. FINES, USAF (retired) 3/13/1949 (New Boston, Texas) – 9/2/2009 (Independence, Mo.) Master Sgt. Larry L. Fines, 60, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2009, after a protracted battle with cancer. A life celebration will be held in his honor at American Legion Post 189, 820 Vista Drive, Lee’s Summit, MO 64063, Monday, September 7, 2009, 7-9 p.m. Full military honors will be granted at Missouri Veterans Cemetery, 2109 Business Highway 13, Higginsville, Mo., on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, at 10 a.m. Larry served his country in the Vietnam conflict, the First Gulf War and then again as a civilian auditor for the Department of Defense. After his retirement from civil and military service he continued working as a tax accountant for Sprint and Embarq. He was a member of American Legion Post 189 and served as American Legion departmental finance officer for many years and also served in numerous other positions with the American Legion at both the state and local level. Those who knew him knew that he was a gentleman prankster who felt that fun was a key component of everyday life. His sense of humor and experience guided him through fatherhood, military service and civilian life. Larry graduated from Columbia College with his bachelor’s degree in business, with graduate work in accounting at Avila University. He was survived by his wife of 33 years, Gail; his four children, Steve and Candice, Elizabeth and Lucas, Robert and Tanya, and Scott and Brianna; two grandchildren, Brayden and Kolby; two sisters, Kris Snodgrass and Marie Reynolds; his mother, Margaret; many nieces and nephews, and a multitude of friends. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made at the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative, 17 Bethea Drive, Ossining, NY 10562-1620.
 
Maria Bloom
BLOOM
Maria Theresa Bloom, age 62, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister peacefully embraced God on September 10, 2009 with her family by her side. Terry was born in San Antonio to Juan and Emma Vasquez on October 13th, 1946. She had a profound and lasting impact on all those around her. Always giving away hugs and smiles Terry was a gift to all that were fortunate to have known her. Her generosity and kindness were only surpassed by her amazing heart. To her family she was their confidant, ever present with motherly advise, support, and most of all her boundless love. During the Vietnam war Terry met her lifelong love and husband Darrell and in 1967 they were married having three sons. She worked at Kelly AFB for 32 years before retiring. As a reservist in the United States Navy she was called to active duty in 1990-91 and served in Southeast Asia during the first Gulf war. Her greatest love and passion was her family who loved her deeply and will always miss her. She is preceded by her parents, Juan and Emma Vasquez. Terry is survived by her husband of 41 years, Darrell S. Bloom, Sr. of Janesville,WI. Sons Darrell S. Bloom, Jr. & wife Taleen, Paul D. Bloom & wife Lisa, and Timothy A. Bloom and wife Holly. Grandchildren Sidney, Devon, Aaron, and Kamryn. Great grandchild Astrid Sophia. Brothers Gilbert and Fernando, Sisters Vera, Lucy, Elva, and Diane. Eric Shink (12/30/1968 – 09/14/2009) 
SHINK, Eric William Was born December 30, 1968 in Butte, Montana to proudparents William and Janelle Shink, died September 14, 2009 outside Payette, Idaho as the result of a tragic andsudden motorcycle accident. Eric grew up in St. Maries,Idaho graduating from St. Maries High School in 1987. He attended North Idaho College before joining the US Marine Corps in 1988. He served from 1988 to 1992 and was a 1st Anglico Surveillance and Reconnaissance Specialist during Desert Storm in Iraq. Eric obtained his degree in fire science in California and began hiscareer as a firefighter and later a paramedic, after being chosen by the Kennewick Fire Department – a vocation he proudly served and wasdedicated to for 15 years. In 2005, Eric was honored as Fire Officer of the Year, being recognized as "leading by example, rising above what is normally required of rank and positionalways putting the safety of his crew as his first priority." At the time of his death, he was serving as Captain atStation 1. On May 14, 1999, Eric married Mary Komendera in Belize. They were blessed with their son, Christian, in August of 2000.

Eric was a proud and loving husband and father who enjoyed spending time with his family. Eric knew no stranger, especially children. People have shared many memories with the family in the past days, recounting his gentle ways, kind heart, generous attitude and friendship. Many children from local grade schools and Boy Scout troops had the good fortune of Captain Shink being their tour guide through the Fire Department. Eric was a free spirit that lived his life passionately. He was an avid recreation enthusiast and embraced his love of motorcycles, automobiles, diving, skiing, snowboarding, wakeboarding, surfing, camping, and boating with his family and friends. Eric’s expertise included being a nationally certified scuba diver, an elite recognition, and had served as a member of the Columbia Basin Dive Rescue. Eric was exceptional in his ability to master skills quickly and proficiently.

He is survived and will be forever loved and missed by his wife, Mary; son Christian; parents Bill and Janelle Shink of St. Maries, Idaho; father- and mother-in-law, Leonard and Sophie Komendera of Carleton, Michigan; sisters/brothers-in-law, niece and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins outstanding colleagues and many, many good friends including those who were like brothers. 

Viewing will be Sunday, September 20th from 5-7 p.m. at MUELLER’S TRI-CITIES FUNERAL HOME in Kennewick. Funeral services will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 506 S. Garfield Street, Kennewick, 2 p.m., on Monday, September 21st. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a college fund established for his son, Christian, at Kennewick Community Federal Credit Union, 2626 W. Kennewick Avenue, Kennewick, Washington.
