The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has removed the U.S. Navy Veterans Association nonprofit organization from its website listing of veterans service organizations. The government acted after U.S. Sen. Jim Webb, D-Virginia, expressed concerns about "unscrupulous organizations" that might "mislead or exploit our nation's veterans."

It looks like U.S. Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) got some pretty speedy action from the Veterans Administration in response to a letter he sent yesterday questioning the continued listing of the nonprofit U.S. Navy Veterans Association in an online directory maintained by the agency of Veterans Service Organizations.

The Roanoke Times piece centered on $67500 in political donations to Republican office holders and seekers given during 2009 by USNVA "director" "LtCmdr" Bobby Thompson. The money appears to me to have been donated to Virginia pols including the State's Attorney General with the possible intent to influence legislation favorable to USNVA being allowed to raise funds in Va. without formal registration. In fairness I must say that $1000 dollars of that money went to the Democrat who introduced the legislation in question.

The mysterious director of a Navy veterans fundraising group that's under investigation in three states contributed $67,500 to the 2009 campaigns of key state officials. Starting July 1, that group can resume soliciting money in Virginia under a state law that Gov. Bob McDonnell signed April 12, despite an unusual last-minute plea from its sponsor, Sen. An absolutely true news item: British Petroleum says it is considering a plan to plug the main leak on the sunken Deepwater Horizon oil rig by shooting it full of shredded car tires, old golf balls and knotted ropes. British Petroleum announced today that it has fired its top engineer for safety design and replaced him with Jody McNamara, age 12, a sixth-grade honors student at the Dwight Eisenhower Middle School in Tulsa, Okla.

Beginning immediately after World War II and continuing in the decades after the imposition of Soviet dictatorship on the countries of Eastern Europe, a group of scientists - primarily Polish, Czech, and Hungarian - secretly collaborated on a scientific study of the nature of totalitarianism. Blocked by the State Security Services from contact with the West, their work remained secret, even while American researchers like Hervey Cleckley and Gustave Gilbert were struggling with the same questions.1 The last known living member of this group, a Polish psychologist and expert on psychopathy named Andrzej Łobaczewski (1921-2007), would eventually name their new science - a synthesis of psychological, psychiatric, sociological, and historical studies - "ponerology", a term he borrowed from the priests of the Benedictine Abbey in the historic Polish village of Tyniec. In order to be in the Army Luther had to pass the various medical and psychological examinations, so his condition couldn’t possibly be pre-existing. He was kept in an isolation chamber for one month, where he was treated worse than a prisoner, until he agreed to sign a pre-existing PD discharge. The Army’s officials found a way to get away with misdiagnosing him and he was denied treatment for his disabilities. The Army’s Chapter 5-13 says that any soldier with pre-existing PD should be discharged from the army with no medical benefits.
