A Line in the Sand Battlefield Still There For Gulf War/Operation Desert Storm Veterans

As the writer of this article reflects again on this conference, one wonders if the VA and DOD had been Proactive in 1991 in finding answers and help for our veterans would our veterans have done better healthwise.  Instead what was experienced was a concentration on STRESS and therefore no treatment based on even looking at vitamin deficiencies as a starting point.  What if VA had been proactive and reached out to the civilian sector and fully listened to Physicians and Researchers like Dr Claudia Miller, Dr Kathleen Leisure-Murray, Dr Baumzweiger, Dr Meggs, Dr Nass, and so many others, would we have more true advances in medicine that would have not only helped Gulf War Veterans but also civilians that have been quiet sufferers?  Would we have civilians doctors more educated and ready to meet the need of WMD exposure now and in the future?

I reflect on what huge advances that have been brought to reality from military medicine and then taken into the civilian population.  The advancements of trauma care, emergency medicine, and prosthatic devices are evidence of what we can do right and we need the same type of attention on more of the invisible — the chronic fatigue/ME/fibromyalgia symptoms of gulf war illness.  This population even by the VA Statistics shows 1 in 4 out of 679,000, that is not thouseands or tens of thousands, but hundreds of thousands of casualties from that short war in 1991.  This is the Uncounted Direct Casualties of the Gulf War 1991, does that chase off the ghosts of Vietnam?

VA it is time to use the civilian experts!  Make it happen!  EDUCATE THE CLAIMS OFFICERS AND HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS NOW!

Delaying and denying claims of the Gulf War Veterans hurts those veterans, their families but also the local and state economies.  It hurts our productivity as a nation!  Covering up the truth of why these veterans are ill does not help our nation.  There is a Line in the Sand still which side are you on now?

It is well past time for truth, accountability, and responsibility for the Desert Storm Veterans.  Are you that hung those Yellow Ribbons in 1990-91 and those of you that Say You Support the Troops ready to tackle this issue?
