THE GRAND MYTH, GADDAFI’S ADOPTED DAUGHTER

We all know the story. The press told us thousands of times. The year in 1986. Libya stood accused of bombing a Berlin night club, Americans were killed and President Reagan ordered a retaliatory air strike.
There is one casualty, Colonel Gaddafi’s young daughter.
Yes, we all know the story but what we all don’t know is that this story, told then as it is told now, is an utter fabrication, not just Libyan propaganda but a grand lie perpetuated by the press, fully complicit then as it is now. Remember this?
“American bombers, the dreaded F111’s swooped in off the Mediterranean, heading for Gaddafi’s family residence, a humble tent representing his Bedouin ancestry. In that tent lay his daughter Hanna, the joy of his life, adopted at birth, with him on his travels, Gstaad for skiing, Dubai for conferences, a child never out of his sight.
The American pilots zeroed in, the weapons officer pinpointing the deadly cargo of cluster bombs onto the unsuspecting family.
There, Hanna was struck down, murdered by President Reagan and his “air pirates.” Her father, Colonel Gaddafi, along with the Libyan people who loved the child as they love her father, their leader and national hero, reeled with shock and grief, a nation stuck down at the act of bestiality.”
This is the story the press carried then and still does to this day. The 1986 attack is never mentioned without a reference to the dead child. In fact, seldom is President Reagan mentioned without recalling the Libyan bombing that killed “Gaddafi’s daughter.”
The story hit the BBC today, one the media knew of for decades but chose to keep “under wraps.” Let’s look at what we think really happened.

The motorcade pulled up to the hospital. Miles away, you could see the smoke rising from the remains of Gaddafi’s air force.
A small army of security personnel and secret police poured into the waiting lobby followed by Gaddafi, looking tired and harried. Gaddafi’s security chief grabbed a nurse and yelled in an irritated voice, “The children, where are they?”
Looking frightened, she cowered and rose to meet his steely glare, “Children? What do you want with them?”
The security chief raised his hand as if to strike, “You have ten seconds to find us a dying child….one…two….”
(moments later)
Gaddafi looked his security chief and asked, “Is this the one?”
The security chief looked over to the nurse and then at Gaddafi, “We better make it quick.”
Gaddafi walked over to the child, picking up her tiny hand, “I adopt thee, I adopt thee, I adopt thee. There! It works for divorces, it should work for adoptions too.”
The group turned and left the room quickly, heading for the lobby and a secure location, far away from any potential military target. As Gaddafi neared his waiting vehicle, he looked to the security chief and asked, “What is her name, she is my daughter now, I must know her name!”
The security chief looked surprised. “Call her anything, call her Hanna for all I care.”
Is this exactly how it happened? We may never know but, as we understand it, this is very close.
This week, Defense Secretary Gates described, not a similar scene but one far more ominous. Civilian casualties of Gaddafi’s army and mercenaries were being gathered up for display as “collateral damage” to blame on NATO.
The real story isn’t about Gaddafi at all but rather his ability to influence the press through, sometimes through threats but mostly through money. For 25 years, the press kept the story behind “Gaddafi’s daughter” secret, one of the most shocking and disgusting tales of our era. Gaddafi is, frankly, expected to do such things, part of the standard fare of the brutal Cold War dictator.
Today, however, the press is busy creating a new Gaddafi, one reborn of a friendship with George W Bush, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove and Tony Blair, if anything more “Stalinesque” characters than Gaddafi could ever be. The trade off was simple, Gaddafi had to bring BP and Haliburton into Libya to take over rebuilding the deteriorating oil and gas infrastructure, in ruins after years of sanctions and he could join the new club, the “Global War on Terror.”
Frankly, Gaddafi fit right in, snug as a bug in a rug, a sociopath among sociopaths, eventually, despite 42 years of ruling Libya as a brutal police state, the “least” of the crowd.
With Gaddafi, every step of the way since 2004 has been the press and his friends in Washington. The Berlin bombings are now “Mossad” and the Lockerbie crash, now blamed on the Palestinians.
A strangely compliant “alternative media” flexing its new muscles selling these abysmal fabrications.
42 years of chemical weapon development, military adventures in Africa, assassinations, machine gunning police from Libya’s London embassy, all as though they never happened.
All he needed was a few oil deals, the right press agent and billions in stolen cash, and the body of one anonymous dead little girl.
