MLMs and Home Businesses – Are They for You?

Whether you’re looking to bring in a bit of extra money each month or want to build your own personal empire, multi-level marketing companies (MLMs) and home based businesses are a smart choice for many people. You’ll be selling already established products and following a proven system. Working a home business, though, is still work, and you need to be ready to make the commitment that it takes to be successful.

Buy-In Prices

Policies vary depending on the company you’re interested in, but most MLMs require you to either be a customer or buy a start-up pack. This ensures that you have some experience with the products and that you have something to show off to the potential customers you speak with. Prices can be as low as $50, but can also go as high as several thousands of dollars. You need to choose a company that fits within your budget. Consider also the cost of the products and whether the people you know are going to be interested in paying those prices. You can sometimes save some money on start-up costs by asking current representatives if they ever run specials.

Products You Believe In

Perhaps the best part about working with a multi-level marketing company is that you’re probably going to choose one that has a product you believe in. Whether that product is children’s books, fancy nails or cooking products, your excitement over what you’re selling is what’s going to help you gain customers. Ideally, you’ll want to choose a company that sells products your customers will want to buy over and over again. Repeat customers are easier to sell to because they already know they like the products.

Your Sales Network

In the start-up stages of your home business, your friends and family are going to be your primary sales network. In some cases, this works well because you’re starting out with a built-in audience. However, some people don’t feel comfortable trying to market to friends and family, who might feel pressure or obligation to buy. Carefully consider how your potential marketing base might respond to the announcement of your business.

Business Mentoring

Getting started with an established ASEA group means that you’ll also get to take advantage of their mentoring and connections. Most of the people “above” you want to see you succeed because they are also getting a piece of the pie. You’ll get to take part in special training, use marketing materials designed by the parent company or people on your team and learn tips from other people who are selling the company’s products. This offers a huge advantage over many types of brick and mortar businesses you could start.

Time and Hard Work

Many MLMs entice new representatives with examples of how much money you could potentially make selling the product and how easy it is to sell such a high-quality product. While these claims might be true, it’s smart to inject a dose of reality into the situation. The products may indeed be easy to sell and you might have the potential to earn a lot of money, but you also have to put in some work. The products won’t sell themselves. True success in a MLM business means that you have to host parties or attend fairs to get your product out to the community. You’ll have to market the product and take care of customer service for your customers. Don’t expect the money to just fall into your lap once you sign up.

The time-tested business model provided by a MLM company offers a convenient way for you to start a business. Before you make a serious commitment, though, you need to take the time to think about whether it’s really the right move for you.
