ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — A delegation of Turkish MPs from the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) is visiting Iraq’s Kurdistan region to inspect the aftermath of Turkish airstrikes against Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighters in Iraq’s Kurdistan region.
They will also investigate alleged civilian deaths from the airstrikes in the village of Zargali to write a report about their findings to the Turkish parliament, delegation head MP Osman Baydemir told Rudaw.
In addition to Baydemir, MPs Kadri Yildirim, Huda Kaya and Nazmi Gur, the co-leader of the HDP, are included in the delegation. The delegation passed through the Ibrahim Khalil border crossing between Iraq and Turkey on Tuesday to enter the Kurdistan region.
The MPs visited injured civilians in Kurdistan region hospitals and then headed towards Zargali village on the outskirts of Mount Qandil.
Zargali was struck on August 1 by Turkish warplanes, which allegedly killed 10 civilians and injured another 11.
Turkish authorities claim they targeted PKK positions in that area. The PKK is blacklisted as a terrorist organization by Turkey and many Western countries, but in the last year it and its affiliated Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) have been at the forefront of fighting ISIS in parts of Iraq and Syria.
