Mayor de Blasio signed a law Thursday to create a Department of Veterans’ Services, a new city agency to aid New York’s 225,000 vets.
De Blasio long opposed the bill, but came on board last month after it gained overwhelming support in the City Council.
“I wanted to make sure, if we were elevating something to the level of department, that we had a serious outline of where we wanted to go with it,” Hizzoner said at the ceremony at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.
“This became a very important priority of the Council, and that matters in and of itself. And it should in a democracy,” he said.
