CHAPLAIN KATHIE: COMMONALITY OF PAIN

13
If you hear someone say they have an abscess tooth, you understand how much pain they are in even if you've never had one, you have had a tooth ache. If you hear someone say they have a sinus infection, you understand how much pain they are in with the pressure building in their head and their body is drained of energy.

VA Taking Life-Saving Campaign to Streets

1
This week, nearly 1,200 life-saving advertisements will go up on city buses, bus shelters, rail and subway stations across the Nation displaying a message of hope for those who have served their country and may be facing an emotional crisis. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is advertising its Suicide Prevention Hotline through Jan. 9, 2011.

GORDON DUFF: PHONY MARINE, “AIRPORT SPITTER” VICTIM “DARLING” OF RIGHT...

56
Mike Hamilton of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was convicted recently of violating the "Stolen Valor Act." Hamilton's Marine uniform sported 2 Navy Crosses, 4 Silver stars along with 74 other medals and ribbons. When the Supreme Court overturned the "Stolen Valor Act" as unconstitutional, a violation of "freedom of speech," Hamilton's conviction was overturned. He currently faces charges for other violations, perhaps even more curious ones, but Hamilton himself isn't the problem. There are some serious questions as to whether "Colonel" Hamilton is competent to stand trial. Today, veterans groups are swooping around Mike Hamilton like vultures, looking for a meal. A few short months ago, he was the darling of the "rubber chicken" circuit, spouting the myths they wanted to hear, waving the flag and cheering on the horse manure of that is so popular to the American "right."

Thousands of our kids are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan carrying the enormous weight of the emotional baggage picked up during their experience of war. This is nothing new, we brought back the same cargo from Vietnam, Korea and WW2. All wars provide their participants with a dismal tide of dark memories, the material of a lifetime of tortured nightmares.

GORDON DUFF: WHY AMERICA MUST HAVE AN ANTI-WAR UPRISING

I am not against war. I am a combat Vietnam Veteran. I know war. Lives were stolen in Vietnam and we are doing again every day, maybe not in same numbers but the lessons of Vietnam have more than been forgotten. The brightest time in American history, another "greatest generation" may well have been the one that stopped an evil and corrupt war. That generation saw the cost. Only the young, the young and the parents of those the war destroyed knew Vietnam. America simply turned away, a nation of, do we call them, do we call us, cowards? Is there another term?

67
Is this Israeli arrogance or are there genuine problems with, not only America's military but culture as well? Are both true? How is being a Jew serving in Israel's military, more conducive to protecting soldiers from combat stress? Why are Americans, in combat across the Middle East, fighting securing Israeli interests in the region, subject to much higher rates of Post Traumatic Stress than Israeli's in action against their own citizens?

Medal of Honor Recipients Push PTSD Counseling

1
It’s among the most sensitive subjects for troops stressed out from war while trying to get on with their lives, their families and their careers: whether to tell anyone what’s going on inside. Now, a unique band of brothers has come together to tell those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder that it’s more than OK to tell. The group consists of 35 Medal of Honor recipients – men from America’s past wars who have the credibility to tell those fighting its current wars that help is there for the taking and to take it.

Officials of the Social Security Income office in Massachusetts told a veteran who applied for help that he would have to quit his job before they could assess his eligibility for funding, two law school professors say. “But he was afraid to quit because he would have insufficient money to exist,” wrote Michael Coyne and Diane Sullivan of the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover in the Lowell, Mass., Sun.

If you have PTSD raise your hand … or maybe not

1
I recently watched Frontline's television documentary called The Wounded Platoon, an investigation that researched the lives of infantrymen after returning home from war in Iraq. The soldiers of Ft. Carson's 3rd Platoon, Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry came home from war with psychiatric disorders such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, known as PTSD. The story was more than troubling — it was heartbreaking.
