If you watched the Grammy Awards on January 31, you were part of one of television’s largest audiences and you also saw VA’s new health care recruitment ad. The Winter Olympics is another big-audience event coming up where the commercial will run a total of 12 times between February 8 and February 28. The ads will also run during CBS’s Amazing Race on February 14 from 8-9 p.m. (EST) and on 60 Minutes February 28 from 7-8 p.m. (EST). The ads direct viewers to VA Careers, and VA medical centers are making sure all available jobs are posted to make the most of the ad campaign’s referral to the site for information about VA job opportunities. These are just a few of the hundreds of television airings scheduled for the recruitment ads in the near future.

What Vets Need From the Prez

The failure to answer 90 percent of calls says a lot about the VA. As the second-largest bureaucracy in the country, it continues to be a model of how not to run government programs. Forget all of Washington's buzz words: transparency, efficiency, fiscal responsibly. We need the administration to try a new term, "customer service." These veterans aren't calling to order an iPad, they're trying to take advantage of a historic benefit that was promised to them by Congress and this president.

Breaking down the FY 2011 Veterans Affairs Budget

1
While most of the DC military press is focused down on the Pentagon today, the Department of Veterans Affairs is also unveiling its fiscal 2011 spending plans and ambitious goals for the near future. Secretary Eric Shinseki will hold a press conference at 315, and we'll have a full story later this afternoon. But even though the $125 billion VA budget proposal is only a fraction of the proposed Defense Department budget, the plans could have wide-reaching ramifications for current service members as well as veterans.

UK Guardian DU and Dioxin Contamination in Iraq

1
Areas in and near Iraq's largest towns and cities, including Najaf, Basra and Falluja, account for around 25% of the contaminated sites, which appear to coincide with communities that have seen increased rates of cancer and birth defects over the past five years. The joint study by the environment, health and science ministries found that scrap metal yards in and around Baghdad and Basra contain high levels of ionising radiation, which is thought to be a legacy of depleted uranium used in munitions during the first Gulf war and since the 2003 invasion.

Obama: Bring Troops Home, Support Veterans

10
President Obama's first State of the Union address last night concluded with Obama noting the administration's "largest increase in investments for veterans in decades -- last year." Obama did not directly address the infamous 'culture of denial' our veterans endure at the U.S. Dept of Veterans Affairs, but he did commit to a specific policy in Iraq and Afghanistan "so ... our troops can begin to come home."
