Marine Dad Must Pay Westboro Court Fees
Albert Snyder got a bill for $16,500 on Friday -- the latest result of his ongoing legal battle with the Westboro Baptist Church.
Church members are seeking to recoup costs from federal appeals court, which dismissed Snyder's lawsuit against them. Snyder's lawyer, Sean Summers, said the court declared last week that Snyder was responsible for the costs.
The Hutaree militia and the rising risk of far-right violence
According to the indictment, the group had been plotting for two years to assassinate federal, state or local police officers. "Possible such acts which were discussed," the indictment says, "included killing a member of law enforcement after a traffic stop, killing a member of law enforcement and his or her family at home, ambushing a member of law enforcement in rural communities, luring a member of law enforcement with a false 911 emergency call and then killing him or her, and killing a member of law enforcement and then attacking the funeral procession motorcade" with homemade bombs.
The True Cost of Plastic : Planet Green
In case you've missed the ongoing coverage here of David de Rothschild and his Plastiki recycled plastic boat expedition, it's a mission worth learning about. Plastic has not spared an inch of the planet from its toxic effects, including the depths of the most remote waters in the world's deep blue oceans.

Foreign Policy Briefing 3/29/10
US and NATO troops firing from passing convoys and military checkpoints have killed 30 Afghans and wounded 80 others since last summer, but in no instance did the victims prove to be a danger to troops, the New York Times reports. "We have shot an amazing number of people, but to my knowledge, none has ever proven to be a threat," said Gen. McChrystal. Such shootings have not dropped off, despite new rules from McChrystal intended to reduce them. The persistence of the shootings has led to growing resentment among Afghans angry at the impunity with which the troops operate - a friction that has turned villages firmly against the occupation, the Times says.
Welcome to Glennbeckistan
What if the Tea Party ruled? Imagine a land, let’s call it Glennbeckistan, where white, patriarchal, religiously zealous, Tea Party-type patriots hold a super-majority in both houses of the legislature, sit in the governor’s mansion, and control most local governments. It’s a place so out of sync with the rest of the nation that states’ rights and even secession are always on the agenda. It’s a place where gun-ownership trumps all other rights, climate change is considered an insidious socialist conspiracy, and a miscarriage can be investigated as a potential crime. Welcome to Utah.

Is America ‘Yearning for Fascism?’
The language of violence always presages violence. I watched it in war after war from Latin America to the Balkans. The impoverishment of a working class and the snuffing out of hope and opportunity always produce angry mobs ready to kill and be killed. A bankrupt, liberal elite, which proves ineffectual against the rich and the criminal, always gets swept aside, in times of economic collapse, before thugs and demagogues emerge to play to the passions of the crowd.

Pak-US Strategic Dialogue: Bridging the Trust Deficit
The maiden test of this dialogue would be the restoration of the trust, which somehow has been the most desired constituent of the bilateral relationship of both countries. Moreover, if this exclusive round of strategic talk was able to restore the trust, how long would it last? This of course would be a test of our diplomacy, but more than this, the dictates of the future strategic interests of both countries, especially the US interest, as the sole super power. Indeed, over the years, the vicissitudes in the Pak-US relationship and discriminatory behaviour of the West has taught us to be realistic in the growth of its future alliance. At the US end, it is felt that its strategic partnership with the India has milked it more than gratifying US strategic intents.
