Alexander Cockburn ripped through mealy-mouthed platitudes about “the urgency of non-proliferation” the way George Orwell ripped through earlier examples of double-speak.
Every country has its own peculiarities, but in international affairs, Pakistan stands out as the one and only state that, despite the perennial turmoil in internal affairs and lack of powerful Beltway lobby, has excelled splendidly in exploiting US ‘smart power’ ambitions . When the US betrayed their staunchest ally, the Shah of Iran, General Zia ul-Haq – unlike Noriega, Hussein, Qaddafi, and Mubarak et al – was the first to conclude that, to count on succor from the White House when push comes to shove, would be a suicidal folly.
Too bad the destruction of Islamic land marks in Timbuktu by the criminal thugs called “Ansar El-Islam/Supporters of Islam” did not generate or illicit the strong condemnations denunciations and material actions it deserves from the religious leaders of Al-Azhar, Mecca, Qom and Najaf. How shall the world view the apology by President Obama for the massacre of 16 Afghan villagers allegedly by a lone U.S. serviceman in Kandahar Province when the President is himself personally responsible for the extra-judicial killing of hundreds of civilians by means of drone aircraft strikes whose crime he defends?
Anyone has my express written permission to not only not read this but to withdraw from all media involvement. Problem is, we have an election coming up and either we go to the streets and bring the nation to its knees or acquiess and vote for Obama or the other candidate, seemingly hand selected to force us all to vote for Obama. For more than a thousand years the Afghan nation, and Pashtun tribes in particular, have resisted all foreign efforts of domination.
I would almost like to ask for a really good psychiatrist, one only slightly crazier than me, to convince me to sit out this election entirely. It has been so many and they make me sick inside. It isn't just the differences in political parties, loose though they seem
